"Your Ordinariness Was Renewed There."

This is The Journey: a depiction of a mind on the move.  The words ‘journey’ and ‘journal’ are closely related.  It's no surprise, given that they both deal closely with the motion of time.

A journey is the act of travelling from one place to another.  The word evolved from the old French ‘journée’, meaning ‘a day’s travel’ or ‘a day’s work.’  'Journal’ comes from Old French, meaning ‘daily record.’  The words tap their feet to the cadence of the day, tracing its little contours and exertions. They remind us of the inevitable progression of a life, whilst caveating that the day is something to be possessed.  We can direct ourselves through it, even hold it, physically, in our hands.

At Wykeham's, we believe journaling is an act of psychological cartography.  As we write, our mind moves around corners, turns back, ventures onward.  It traces the frontiers of past experience, flexes the boundaries of perception.  Journaling forces us to make sense of the relationship between our consciousness and what has passed.

We wanted this campaign to coalesce with the season; to catch the changeful, auburn canopies, the stirring canal waters and white skies.  Autumn is itself a time of motion. Each day is a marker of the year travelling towards its end. The ruins of Godstow Abbey seemed an esoteric but apt place from which to explore a journal’s power to venture out with you – to build memories that remain as other forms crumble.

Moments spent in solitude with an empty page celebrate idiosyncrasy.  Let your unusualness, the distinctive essence that is ‘You’ strike out onto the page.  The journey taken with a journal is always one that returns to yourself.
